When Natalia passed away at 24, Dr. Egli Colón Stephens lost her only child, the center of her world—yet she refused to be silenced or diminished by grief.
In Beyond Grief, Egli continues her conversation with Natalia, sharing a faith tested by fire, the questions that still linger in her soul, and a brave—almost defiant—decision to keep living as an act of love and devotion to her daughter.
As a teenager, Natalia overcame cancer and went on to become a professional model and body-positivity advocate, living with rare strength and purpose. Years later, after a second diagnosis of a rare and aggressive cancer, she faced life with unwavering courage, leaving a lasting mark on all who knew her.
Since Natalia’s passing, Egli has transformed their story of resilience into a message of strength and hope. She was interviewed twice by Oprah Winfrey for Oprah Daily and has shared her story through Guideposts, SHARE Cancer Support, the Dominican Writer’s Conference, podcasts, and international speaking engagements. Her emotional response to seeing Natalia featured in a Delta Air Lines campaign after her passing was covered by Today, Newsweek, Yahoo, Blavity, and TheGrio, among others.
Beyond Grief, Egli’s memoir interwoven with excerpts from Natalia, is an invitation to move through grief without denying it, to transform absence into guidance, and love into legacy—with a deeply moving foreword by Elaine Féliz.

This is proof that the human spirit remains UNBROKEN when grounded in faith.
Unbroken is a hope-filled story of a mother and a daughter, and their unwavering grip on life, reminding us that the human spirit is unbreakable. Grounded in their faith, together they battle a life-threatening disease that would forever change the course of their lives.
In this chronicle, you will hear these warriors’ roar, holding on to life and God's promises. REVIEWS OF UNBROKEN
“Moving and life-giving!
I was transported while reading this book. I was there with them as they hailed cabs in NYC on their way to the hospital. I felt the fear and pain of a mother handling the fragility of life of her only child. I was in awe many times, wondering, "How did she handle all this?" Of course, the answer is made clear continually. Every page is a glory to God as she tells the story of holding on, praying, believing, and seeing the best out of every situation, setback, or surprise. The story, though at times agonizing, was so full of life. I always felt better after reading a few pages. I think it's the feeling of renewed hope. That's the central theme for me. Egli teaches you ways to renew your hope in the midst of crisis, fear, and confusion. Bonus: you get a glimpse at the Dominican culture in NYC :).”

“A great read!
I could not wait to start reading it. Several chapters in, my immediate reaction was “People need to read this book!” It’s full of culture and savory moments. Reading it made me feel at home! Dr. Egli Stephen’s detailed descriptions of her upbringing reminded me of my own, and suddenly, I felt homesick. Her use of Hispanic words here and there, her love for literature, reading, and her interests in learning about Hispanic writers gave me a sense of belonging. I could relate. She was born for this journey. I am happy with my purchase. If you want to experience family love, absolute faith, and learn about your own strength through someone else’s eyes, get this book! You will not regret it, and who knows... you might get inspired. It is worth it!
